After claiming heavenly visitations and ordinations in the late 1970s, Toney felt he was called to preach the gospel. By 1980 he had gained a few followers, and they set up the Church of Jesus Christ (Toney). Toney emphasizes frugality and rejection of worldliness and materialism.
